With around 3000 students, the Komi State Pedagogical Insitute, or Pedinstitut, is the teacher training college for the Komi Autonomous Republic, a Montana-sized province just west of the Urals. It is the oldest post-secondary school in Komi, and it draws students from all over Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union. Courses are offered in a variety of subjects, including history, math, economics, computer science, psychology, education, and foreign languages (English, French, and German).
The Pedinstitut's partnership with the University of Maine at Farmington began in 1989 when the university sponsored citizen exchanges between Farmington and Komi. Semester-long faculty exchanges began in 1992, and student exchanges started in the fall of 1993.
